Choosing a tutor for your child
Luxembourg's school system is multilingual, and that is often where children need a little extra help. In the public école fondamentale, children have traditionally learned to read and write in German, with French added later. Under the ALPHA reform, families can now choose literacy in German or French: parents of children in cycle 1.2 make this choice for the first time during the 2026/2027 school year. In secondary school, the language used for many subjects can change again depending on the track. Families at international or European schools face their own mix of languages and curricula.
A good tutor knows your child's school system and curriculum, not just the subject. Ask which levels and programmes they have taught, how they will measure progress, and whether lessons take place at your home, at theirs or online. A short trial session shows whether your child feels comfortable. Talk to the class teacher too: they can tell you where your child is struggling and whether the school already offers support. Keep the goal clear, whether it is catching up, preparing for a test or building confidence in a language, and review it together after a few weeks.
