Getting support for your child
Sometimes a child needs more support than family and school can give, whether it is anxiety, sleep problems, behaviour, learning difficulties or a speech delay. Talking to a specialist early can make a real difference, and your paediatrician or your child's teacher is often a good first person to ask.
In Luxembourg, psychotherapist is a regulated health profession, so you can ask whether a practitioner is authorised to practise by the Ministry of Health and Social Security. Speech therapists (orthophonistes) are regulated health professionals too. Ask about their experience with children of your child's age, the approaches they use, the languages they work in and how they involve parents. Psychotherapy with an authorised psychotherapist and speech therapy can be reimbursed by the national health insurance (CNS) with a doctor's prescription, in full for children under 18 and within set session limits. Check the current conditions with the CNS before you start. Children with specific needs can also get support through the school system, and your child's school can explain the next steps. A good first session should leave both you and your child feeling heard.
