Choosing a crèche or childcare centre
Finding the right crèche or daycare is one of the biggest decisions for working parents in Luxembourg. Childcare services for young children (services d'éducation et d'accueil) must be licensed by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, and school-age children are often cared for before and after school in a maison relais.
Places can be in high demand, so start looking early, ideally during pregnancy. When you visit, ask about group sizes, the languages spoken with the children, daily routines, meals and outdoor time, as well as opening hours and holiday closures. Many providers take part in the chèque-service accueil (CSA), the state childcare subsidy. Costs depend on your household income and situation, children aged 1 to 4 get 20 free hours a week in participating crèches, and care for école fondamentale pupils is free during school weeks. Residents sign up through their commune administration; cross-border workers apply through the Caisse pour l'avenir des enfants (CAE). Trust your instincts during the visit: a calm, warm atmosphere and staff who take time to answer your questions are good signs.
